It is with great sadness and frustration that I come to you tonight. Once again we are witness to a horrific injustice at the hands of rogue law enforcement officers. Another avoidable tragedy that has left a young mans life cut short, and a family with wound that will never be healed.

Myself, the Union Board, and the entire CPOA Membership wish to extend our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Nichols.

As members of the greater law enforcement community, we are charged with a great responsibility and even greater trust by our community. A trust that is built on the idea that the members of law enforcement can and will uphold the law with honor, dignity and above all, respect for human life! When any member of law enforcement breaks that sacred trust, we all suffer as a society. That trust is more fragile than ever, and events such as this further erode trust society places in its law enforcement community. Tonight, the failings of the few overshadow the good works of the many.

As we come to terms with these events, I encourage us all to speak out, but to do so with dignity, respect and with peace. Violence is not the way to better our society in the face of tragedy. Rather open dialog, communication and commitment is the path to justice. Together we can to strive for continuous improvement, accountability and justice. The CPOA stands committed to serving its community with highest level of honor and respect. We mourn with our community as we reflect on our responsibility to serve it.
